How to wear makeup over 50, preferably in 10 minutes maximum and with targeted and effective products?
That’s what Giada asked me after my last newsletter, a reader who has just reached this beautiful age (by the way, happy birthday!) and would like to know how to apply makeup well and quickly with the right products at this age.
First of all I’d like to say that I’m NOT a make up expert and I don’t want to pretend to be one, on the contrary: I’m a 53 years old woman who has been using and testing on herself for almost 40 years make up products of many different brands and price ranges.
Over the years, I have hand-picked the most effective and high quality products, the ones that offer optimal performance for my skin and colors and show good durability.
Of course, each of us is different when it comes to how to wear makeup at 50: different skin types, different problems, different tolerance to different formulations and different ingredients as well.
Therefore, this list is in no way intended to be a recommendation for everyone: I would simply like to talk to you, as an “advanced user” , about my all-time favorite make-up products, the ones that have turned out to be real lifesavers at 50 when you want to put your makeup on in a few minutes!).
MAKEUP AT 50: MY TOP 7
Here then is my very personal “hit parade” to wear makeup at 50 years and beyond – a list of 7 makeup products ideal for women over 50 that, in recent years, have proved to be really valuable:
MAC Prep+Prime Natural Radiance
This primer is not only great at smoothing your skin, it also exists in two shades (pink and yellow). Special illuminating powders reflect the light, immediately creating a luminous effect on the complexion. In the morning, this primer is a real treat, especially in winter!
It exists in two shades, yellow, which is particularly effective on medium dark skin tones (I actually have very fair skin, but I also use a bit of self-tanning and yellow works very well on me) and pink for lighter skin tones.
The formula disappears at the moment you apply it, giving rise to a beautiful glow. Also the formulation, a “nourishing gel”, facilitates the application of makeup and prolongs its duration.

Barry M – That’s Swell XXL – Lucidalabbra volumizzante
I found this lovely lip gloss on Asos and I never left it. It gives a pleasant “tingling” on the lips at the moment of application and (at leas temporarily) fuller lips. In addition to this effect, I especially appreciate its texture, not too sticky, and the right degree of gloss (bright but not excessive), which makes it a brilliant product to use alone or on top of any lipstick.
I, for example, use it in combination with my favorite nude lipstick, Honeylove di Mac, and the “Spice” lip pencil from MAC and I find that this trio gives beautiful full lips.

Touche Eclat
This product is a classic that has been around for ages. In fact, now Touche Eclat, given its success, gives its name to an entire line of products. I’ve never tried the others though, so I’ll just tell you about this one, which I’ve known for a long time.
I admit that the concealer is not a product I always use, but sometimes, for example after a long day of work and before going out, Touche Eclat is a real panacea. Not very mellow compared to many of its “colleagues”, in fact, it has a strong illuminating function and can also be used as a highlighter. For example in the inner corner of the eye or, slightly shaded with a finger, in the nasal grooves when they are a little more evident than usual.
Perfect and chic to keep in any handbag, even the smallest clutch.
NYX Professional Makeup Epic Ink eyeliner – Brown
This product is not only low-cost, but it was also the result of a selection process that lasted years on the best makeup at 50.
In fact, when it comes to makeup eyes over 50 I have a bit ‘all. A “liquid” eyelid, hyper-sensitive eyes, and I’m also clumsy when it comes to applying eyeliner the right way.
NYX Professional Makeup – Contouring Stick Medium
Even though I only apply the contouring technique only sometimes in the evening, this double-tipped stick is great, both in texture and ease of use. It comes in different color shades, suitable for your skin type.
Sigma 3D Blender Black
This “beautyblender” of the iconic Sigma brand, famous for the high quality of its brushes and other make-up accessories, is very useful to blur anything!
Its structure with many edges and corners is very useful to give a natural touch to your everyday makeup. For eyes, cheekbones and any contouring, in fact, it always offers the perfect angle to blur everything well. Highly recommended!
