How to dress to look younger at 40, but in fact ad any age? Today I am here to talk to you about a topic on which I receive many questions almost every day, like
What colors to wear to make you look younger?
How should I dress to look 10 years younger?
That’s why today I would like give you seven pieces of advice – seven things which, in my opinion, are very simple and can take away years, not only from our looks, but also from our overall physical image, because they are really able to have a rejuvenating effect on our appearance.
But let’s come to today’s topic, which is, how to appear younger by choosing the right look. Often, in fact, we make a series of small errors, which can add years to our outfits. These mistakes can be easily prevented and work in our favor.
#1 Clothes are not everything
Of course, the first piece of advice that I would like to give you is to not obsess over how you dress. In fact our image, our look is not solely made by the clothes and accessories you choose to wear. It’s made of so much more.
For example our hairstyle can literally take away years from a woman, but also the make-up, which has to be in my opinion appropriate for our age. As we age our make-up must evolve with us. In some cases it even has to be more simple and less heavy. This is one piece of advice that, if you follow it through, it can definitely help you because it helps you to simplify your life.
Another very important aspect that I will keep on repeating is our mental attitude. I think what really matters when trying to look younger is how we interact with the world. We should never, in my opinion, stop being passionate about new things, travel and being interested in many things, because this is the primary cure for staying young before even thinking of what to wear.
#2 Roll up your sleeves
Let’s talk about the outfit and more practical advice for our everyday looks, that can make us look younger and even take away years from our physical appearance which can make us seem slimmer, fitter and overall young again. A little trick that many women don’t do is to roll up their blouses’ and blazers’ sleeves.
Often, it’s enough to show a few centimeters of our wrists, to make the whole look seem slimmer, younger, fitter and confer us more energy. This happens, because the wrists luckily are part of the slimmest parts of our bodies, and also stay that way, even if we gain a few kilos or if we aren’t in top form physically. The wrist is always a very slim point of our bodies that is worth enhancing. To do this, it is enough to roll the sleeves back of our blazers. In the last years, blazers with already lightly rolled up sleeves have started to appear. I bought two of those from Zara, which have an elongated, soft line, that Zara proposes again every year. It’s clear that they have a lot of success in a lot of colors, so take a look.
Otherwise, what you can do is simply roll up the sleeves of your blazers, obviously without hurting the fabric or even using a little hair band to make sure that the sleeves stay up without you having to constantly fix them. You can use this same trick with shirts, pullovers, blouses and anything that has sleeves. I didn’t do it today, but I could have done it.
I simply take the button of the sleeve and roll it up slightly.
This little trick naturally works only if the uncovered piece of arm doesn’t reach a point where your arm is a little more muscular and therefore larger. If the cuffs end on the thinnest part of your arm they will complete their function to the fullest.

#3 Show your ankles
A second trick to rejuvenate your outfit is to show your ankles.
Like our wrists, our ankles too. Especially for those amongst us who are fortunate enough to have a naturally skinny ankle.
These are the slimmest parts of our bodies that stay slim, even if we gain a few kilos.
So, now that cropped pants, that leave the ankle uncovered are so popular, let’s experiment, because they uncover the slimmest section of our legs.
One of the things women often notice on themselves is that culotte pants often don’t suit them well. This has a simple explanation; the culotte model often end on the largest section of the calf, which is the largest point of the inferior part of the leg. The risk is, that it can make us appear stubbier than we are and it can even visibly shorten our legs, because it creates a horizontal split in one of the largest parts of our legs.
So, maybe abandon the culotte pants, especially if you are already having a hard time wearing them because you find that they don’t suit you and instead experiment with pants that are a bit shorter around the ankle, which will suit you better.
The same applies to skirts and dresses, that often confer a farmer who is ready for harvest vibe, when it would be enough to lower the hem towards the ankle to completely visibly change the visual effect. Therefore, make a few tests in front of the mirror, because these are two simple tricks, those of the ankles and the wrists, that can really make us appear younger and take away many years from our physical appearance and looks.
#4 Add a little structure
A third tip is to experiment, especially on softer, more casual looks, a structured piece. In fact, if we combine an upper and a lower piece with a shoulder piece, like a big cardigan, that doesn’t define our figure well, the risk is that we will obtain an overall soft effect on our bodies, which is not very flattering and adds weight on any women. Unless you are 1,85 meters tall and very skinny, in which case it could even add curves that in reality are not there and therefore be flattering.
For the large majority of women over 40, adding a single structured piece to their outfit, will add that slight definition that makes us seem fitter, taller and more muscular and will therefore be more flattering.
Let me make a few examples, for example, if you add a to a classic cut pair of pants with a soft leg and a soft blouse, a tailored coat or a custom-tailored blazer, you will notice that this single structured piece will make your entire outfit appear younger and rejuvenated.
#5 Create contrast in your style
Another tip, and I often do this, because I like this a lot, is to create splits in your outfit. Especially if you love to dress in a more classic manner, if you usually choose basic pieces, like a classic cut pair of pants, a blazer, a shirt with a masculine cut, but still classic, and you might even prefer neutral colors, like beige and colors that are associated to a classic and traditional outfit style, try to create a few splits.
You could match a classic bon ton piece that you are wearing, with something more edgy.
I, for example, created a mini faux skin pants collection in my wardrobe, that I match with bon ton blouses, a camel colored coat in the winter or a blazer for this season. Sometimes it is enough to replace a classic piece with something that has a similar cut, but is more edgy and ruff, more modern and fashionable, to create a completely new effect. The same applies to dark, classic cut jeans that are matched with a boho-chick blouse, that appears more hippy. It creates an overall different effect.
Therefore, let’s learn to create these splits in our looks where we match a basic, classic piece with something more edgy and ruff or something more sexy or colored, maybe even something neutral. This will create these contrasts that always win in fashion.
Moreover, this is one of the so called French chic style principles of the French elegance, especially of the Parisian one, which has been particularly vaunted for its playfulness in matching edgy, modern pieces with classic pieces. These contrasts always work and take away many years from our outfits and therefore from us.
Another contrast you can try, is this strong match, that just came to my mind, which is, wearing sneakers with traditional outfits, like a classic suit or pants, as well as a very feminine longuette dress.
Here, that’s how a pair of modern sneakers change a look completely.
#6 Define your waistline
Another tip of this type is to always define your waistline a bit. But do it with discretion, because these things you see around, where the waistband literally squeezes the waistline in such an obvious manner can have the opposite effect. If we want to rejuvenate our looks, everything has to seem effortless and very, very casual. We don’t want to look like we did it on purpose to obtain that particular effect.
For example, speaking of tops like blouses and shirts, this effect can be obtained by tucking in, or half tucking in your top. Namely, tucking in your blouses in your pants in a casual way. Maybe even just in the front or sideways or in the center and letting the rest of the fabric emerge.
This is an example of defining your waistline in an effortless way.
Even wearing a belt, maybe in a contrasting color, for example, can have the same effect without squeezing it much.
Another way, is to not tuck in your whole top part in your pants or under the rim of your skirt or your waist, which can squeeze us in unflattering places, but to choose maybe tailored pieces that accentuate and therefore define your waistline with grace and effortlessness, without having to create horizontal lines or having to wear something that squeezes our waists.
It is especially important to do this for certain body types. Because for those who have wider shoulders or décolletés, clothes may tend to appear to wide and therefore add kilos to our looks.
#7 Enhance your strong sides!
Another tip to rejuvenate your outfit immediately is to analyze ourselves profoundly from head to toe and to enhance everything that we like about us.
Also, in this case, there are women who would want us to be completely covered from head to toe at a certain age, which makes us often look older when we are only 35-40 years old.
I do not agree. It is clear that we shouldn’t wear certain things, like mini skirts that reach the armpits. Or excessively revealing tops in the city but maybe on the beach instead. It very much depends on the context, but I do not agree on hiding your skin at all costs, on the contrary. Showing a little bit of skin, for example, if you have a beautiful décolleté or still very beautiful legs and you don’t use those super short cuts, can confer much freshness and youth to your look.
That said, don’t listen to this kind of misplaced advice, examine yourself with a critical eye in front of a mirror. Then choose to enhance and show off a little bit of skin, especially those parts that you particularly like and that have been well kept in the years. This is something that we can do at all ages.
#8 Add a trendy touch
The last piece of advice to rejuvenate your look is to incorporate something that is currently trending, something trendy.
Many women, after a certain age, set aside their interest in fashion and new trends, but I do not agree. I place myself in the middle. On one hand, I find it unnecessary to renovate our wardrobe following every new trend, because if you look at some trends, many are not even wearable.
They are maybe created for the catwalk, but outside of there, you won’t see anyone wearing them, unless it’s a hard-core fashionista or a fashion victim, someone who simply cannot give up their passion for fashion. But otherwise, it will not transfer from the catwalk to the street.
Other trends are absolutely pleasant and ready to wear. They might enhance something beautiful or enhance a particularly harmonious and gracious feature about us, so, why not? Never say never to new trends, learn to be selective and critic.
We only choose what inspires us instinctively, we choose something that highlights our strong spots and that integrates well with the rest of our wardrobe.
This way, we don’t need to do too much shopping, because this is a way to rejuvenate our looks as well. Here I am thinking about sneakers, for example, especially those modern models, that can be well matched with ultra-basic pieces, but also, for example, the style and color of the trends that can change from season to season can change the overall appearance of the basics and neutral colors that we usually wear.
So, this, in my opinion, is another great tip to follow, if you want to rejuvenate your outfit and your look.
